Making It Big Online - Chasing The Dream

Many moons ago... say way back in the early 90's I came to the conclusion that working for a living in the traditional sense just wasn't a lot of fun. Infact it was one big drag!

It's not that I am against hard work... I just would rather build something of my own and reap the financial rewards rather then toil in some IT shop for what may or may not be a decent wage.

So I quit my job! Really I just wanted to move to Vancouver and thought I would just get another job or do some contracting. But then the Internet happend. Well maybe it was Netscape that happened and I discovered the Internet.

Now I knew what i wanted to do... I was going to build something online and make my fortune doing things my way. The dream was born... So was my first son but that's a whole different story.

The Original Plan

In the early days it was pretty easy to see that the Internet was growing out of control... There were so many websites popping up and no really good way to find anything.

The other main problem I could see was that nothing was being organized in terms of where websites were operating from and what they were there for.

So my first big Idea was to make a great directory, one that was regional and well organized. I came up with the name InterCity Directories. All I needed to do was register a domain IDirect.com I thought would be perfect.

That was my first lesson on how unoriginal my thinking really was...

The Domain Name Game

As I said in my previous post registering my domain name for my great new business venture turned into an eye opener.

Apparently my brilliant idea was not so original a thought... IDirect.com was gone along with InterCity.com, InterDirect.com, cityDirect.com and just about anything you could imagine with the words direct or city.

Plan B infoDirect.com.. gone. info2000! gone. I was getting desperate! finally inf2000.com popped up as available. I immediately grabbed it thinking it would be gone in seconds.

So I had my first domain name registered. Not exactly what I had hoped for. Inf2000.com sounded kind of lame but it would have to do.
